By the age of 11 years, my first camera, an instamatic type later on a semi-automatic and finally the mirror reflex camera(Praktica / Nikormat ) with the famous Metz flash, the CT 45-with wet-battery, it weighs a ton but from 20 meters distance (65 feet!) you still could use the flash effectively.
